Stranger Things Theory: The Upside Down Causes Chernobyl – Screen Rant

Stranger Things
The settings and themes in Stranger Things have made way for a bunch of theories, many of them connecting to real-life events - including the Chernobyl disaster. The Duffer Brothers’ Netflix sci-fi series Stranger Things has taken inspiration from both fictional works (most notably Stephen King’s stories) and real-life elements that are quite obscure, such as Project MKUltra. With the story set in the 1980s, the writers have had plenty of creative freedom with some of the most bizarre and dangerous things that took place during the Cold War and the paranoia that came with it. Stranger Things season 1 was set in 1983 and focused on the disappearance of Will Byers, the experiments at Hawkins National Laboratory, and the open door to an alternate dimension known as the Upside Down. Season 2 caught up with the characters a year later and dealt with the aftermath of Will’s time at the Upside Down and the arrival of a new creature from the strange and deadly dimension. Season 3 was set in the summer of 1985 and showed that the Russians have been hiding and experimenting in Hawkins, thus leaving the door open to all types of dangers. Supposing season 4 follows ....

The post-credits scene of the final episode of season 3 revealed that the Russians are still experimenting with it, and even have some demodogs at the lab. Now, as mentioned above, it’s very likely that season 4 will be set in 1986, the year of the Chernobyl disaster, and with the series acknowledging the Russians and their experiments, it’s possible that the Upside Down has something to do with the nuclear accident. Given that the Russians are not fooling around with their work and are conducting big (and dangerous) experiments with the Upside Down, one of these could go terribly wrong and cause the fourth reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant to explode. The effects of radioactive contamination on creatures like the Mind Flayer are up to the imagination. Another way Stranger Things can connect to the Chernobyl disaster is by using it as cover-up. Again, one of the Russians’ experiments goes wrong (whether they release a creature worse than the Mind Flayer or create one. .
